The Beyond Borders Book Club has been an exciting initiative devised by Artistic Director, Paul Perry and facilitated by poet and community activist Sarah Clancy to include and showcase an international dimension and flavour of readers in Co. Clare.
In autumn 2017, we put a call out to find book lovers from another country but living in Clare who would like to introduce people to their favourite book by a writer from their country. The result is the Beyond Borders Book Club. Four people from different countries presented their favourite book over four evenings in January and February and described what they love about it and the culture it comes from.
On 3rd May, all four will come together with Sarah Clancy for a panel discussion. Expect a diverse and accessible discussion of literature from all corners of the world. All welcome.
The presenters and their chosen books are:
Margaret Khalil from Egypt - 'Palace Walk' by Naguib Mahfouz
Małgorzata Buchalik from Poland - The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz
Carlos Navotka from Argentina - The Gaucho Martin Fierro by Jose Hernandez
Ifeoma Ugwueru from Nigeria - Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
